This was a very good, well written and detailed story of those labor camps in Russia during WW2. I didn't know there were such camps or what happened the Polish people after the Russians took over their country. What a disaster it was for Ellie and her Mother from Switzerland to have been caught up in that terrible situation.Product details

It's easy to feel for all the characters. You learn about the struggles they had to endure. You understand what it took to survive.
This book was referred to us for a read aloud prior to an event with author. What a courageous story!
This book, above all else, demonstrates how toughness and a will to survive outrank all other attributes needed when faced with horrific times. A fourteen-year-old girl, plus a resourceful mother, trapped by the WWII Russian advance, defeat all odds and survive. Even a Siberian gulag could not overcome their spirit. An inspiration to us all.
It is a wonderful read based on a true account. How little I knew of this part of European history, the heartbreak and the bloodshed as well. Beautifully written. I am honored that I will be able to meet the author in person next month.
This is a wonderful book. The writer depicted what she went through during WWII being caught in Poland just as the Germans were entering from the west and not realizing it but the Russians entering from the East. They were foam malt caught by the Russians and sent to a camp in Syberia. I couldn't put the book down
Everyone should know this story. Incredibly touching, made more so by meeting the now 90 year-old author. Ellie wrote a follow up book, which I'm looking forward to reading soon.
This was an easy read. It went quickly but kept you wanting to read on to find out what would happen next. Truly a great read to see the inhumanity of people against the caring and humaneness of others determined to survive.
